School for Strings

Founded by Louise Behrend, the pioneering musician who introduced the teaching concepts of violinist Shinichi Suzuki to the United States, The School for Strings has provided instrumental instruction to thousands of children, and Suzuki teacher training to graduates from the world’s finest conservatories. The school is a non profit organization supported by private donations. As such we endeavored to create the greatest impact with judicious use of resources.

The scope of the project involved harmonizing the interiors of the school through specific interventions at entry and public waiting areas. Also, the existing main recital room was refreshed with new finishes and updated acoustics for an enhanced visual and aural experience. Throughout the building we strove to improve the architectural quality of the spaces with new lighting and updated finishes in order to foster a creative collaboration among instructors and students. Custom built-in furniture systems were designed to store and display various string instruments.
